Our Spotlight on a team member series introduces you to the various people who work directly with you and behind the scenes to build and maintain your financial plan.
There is a wide range of different people with unique skills who all come together to support you.
So far in the series, you’ve learned more about:
- Chartered financial planner and managing director Nick Swartout
- Technical administrator Elena Newton
- Financial planner Geoff Corden
This month, meet another of our financial planners, John Findlay, and learn more about his role in the business.
1. What is your role at Bray Wealth?
I work as a financial planner at the practice, and my role revolves around my clients. I aim to give people clarity on their overall financial position and help them have peace of mind that their plans are on track and they will be secure.
2. What first attracted you to your career and what steps did you take to reach your current position?
I was a mortgage adviser at Cheltenham and Gloucester and would talk to people about life insurance as part of the role. Occasionally I would ask a person about it and they would say that they “had a financial adviser”. I remember being impressed with how much trust was placed in their adviser.
I was always keen to progress and at Cheltenham and Gloucester the next step would have been to move into management. However, this did not appeal to me, and instead I wanted to keep helping people and working in a face-to-face role. So, becoming a financial adviser seemed like the obvious step.
3. What qualifications and professional training do you have that help you support clients?
I have a Diploma in Financial Planning from the CII and must complete 35 hours of continuing professional development each year.
I am also an accredited member of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA), who are a not-for-profit organisation that supports advisers with later life planning.
4. What is the most rewarding part of your role at Bray Wealth?
The most rewarding part is when you speak to someone who does not know when they can stop work and you can give them a specific plan about when they can retire and how to achieve this.
Sometimes I see people, and they are already at the point when they can afford to no longer work, as they have achieved financial independence, and that is particularly good news to be able to pass on.
5. What are your biggest professional goals for the next year?
I want to keep helping people with their finances and trying to give my clients peace of mind.
6. What are you most excited about outside of work over the next year?
I am going to Orlando in October to see Disney World with my wife Faye and daughter Paige, who is 10. I have never been before and don’t quite know what to expect!
Also, the World Cup is quite exciting and the Test Match season is upon us!
