Nick Swartout conquers the Atlas Mountains

Back in 2022 our Managing Director, Nick felt it was time for an exciting new challenge, so he decided to learn how to ride a motorbike. A short while later, he had his licence and was looking for a new adventure.

He wanted the opportunity to experience something totally different and meet interesting new people. So, in April 2023, Nick headed to the Atlas Mountains in Africa for an off-road motorbike tour.

The trip was privately organised by a company called Moto Adventures who supplied them with KTM450 off-road bikes. They also carried luggage and provided support along the way, so Nick and the rest of the group could focus on traversing the challenging terrain and enjoying the awe-inspiring views.

The group started in the picturesque coastal town of Sidi Rahhal, just outside of Marrakech. From here, they embarked on a mammoth trip through the Atlas Mountains, following the Tizi n’Tichka – one of the best-loved, but also most challenging roads in the region.

Nick and the team set out on the ride, which took them through High Atlas, the tallest mountain range in the region. The road itself is steep and the terrain is difficult, but the challenge is worthwhile for the amazing views along the way.

The route links the Marocain plains with the Sahara desert, so the group had plenty of opportunities to take a break and soak in some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world.

There were also lots of places to pull over and meet with the locals, allowing Nick the chance to really get to know this incredible country and its culture outside of the big cities.

After six days and a staggering 1,500km, Nick and the rest of the group arrived back in Marrakech where the journey finished.

The entire trip was a huge success. Not only was it a once-in-a-lifetime experience in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, it was also a great challenge for Nick, requiring him to work closely with a team of complete strangers to complete the ride.

Only time will tell what Nick’s next big adventure will be.
